A wide variety of materials including fluid lubricants, greases, cutting fluids, metals, composites, ceramics, polymers, and coatings can be tested. The test is performed by loading the test specimen against a ball, pin, or cylinder undergoing reciprocating linear motion. The frictional force developed at the contact interface is measured by a force transducer. The output signal can be captured by a storage oscilloscope or TriboDATA, Koehler's Data Acquisition Software, for evaluation. The reciprocating motion of the ball results in a unique velocity profile which allows for monitoring of static and dynamic friction force over a wide range of linear sliding speeds. The test load, stroke, frequency, and temperature can be adjusted to simulate different testing conditions.
